We all have our holiday traditions … those things that are done every year without fail. It might be a certain decoration, or the dish that’s always used for the mashed potatoes. Maybe it’s a certain recipe or two, or even a game that the family plays after dinner.
One of the things that we used to love to do with the kids when they were little was make holiday treats. Each holiday had a special treat. Of course, most of them were done around the Christmas holidays, but one of my favorites was at Thanksgiving. I’m not even sure where I got the recipe from, but it’s been in my recipe box for years, hand-written and drawn on a 3 x 5 card.
Allow me to introduce you to our favorite Thanksgiving treat, Gobble Gobble.
These delightful little turkeys are completely edible, and are held together with Choco-Glue. Yes, you read that correctly … Choco-Glue. Seriously, you can’t ever go wrong with chocolate.
Are you ready for the step-by-step?
Ingredients
- Ginger Snaps
- Chocolate Kisses
- Chocolate Chips
- Candy Corn (yellow/orange/white)
- Red Hots
For each Gobble Gobble you’ll need the following:
- 1 Ginger Snap
- 2 Kisses
- 4 Chips
- 7 Candy Corn
- 1 Red Hot
The directions are for one, but the easiest way to make them is assembly line style.
1. The first thing you’ll want to do is cut off the tips of the Kisses. Go ahead and eat them … you know you want to 🙂
2. Fill a small ramekin with about 1/4 cup of chocolate chips.
3. To make the Choco-Glue, put the chocolate chips in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir when done. Reheat in microwave 10-15 seconds at a time and continue stirring until you have smooth, melted Choco-Glue.
4. Place a ginger snap on a piece of wax paper / freezer paper / foil. To build the feathers, apply a little bit of Choco-Glue to the back of the candy corn. Attach the candy corn to the top of the ginger snap. You’ll do four candy corns on the back layer, and three candy corns on the front.
5. For the neck, apply some Choco-Glue to the back of the chocolate kiss that you trimmed. Place it under the feathers.
6. For the head, again using the Choco-Glue, join two chocolate chips together at their bases. Apply some Choco-Glue to the top of the neck, and place the head on the neck.
7. At this point I put them in the refrigerator for a few minutes so the Choco-Glue can harden.
8. Once the Choco-glue has hardened, remove from the refrigerator. Apply a little Choco-Glue to the space between the head and neck and apply a Red Hot.
9. For the legs, you’re going to Choco-Glue two chocolate chips, putting one chip on each side of the neck.
10. Put it back in the refrigerator for a few more minutes.
11. To attach the tail, apply some Choco-Glue to a full size chocolate kiss. Stand the turkey up, and then press the kiss onto the back, pushing down so that it touches the surface, balancing the turkey.
And that’s it! You’re done! You are the proud parent of your very own Gobble Gobble. These Gobble Gobble’s are adorable as table decorations, or as place setting holders.
These Thanksgiving treats would be a fun addition to your holiday traditions. Enjoy making them with your children or your grandchildren. Copy the instructions on a 3 x 5 card like I did. Oh, and be careful. It’s entirely possible that you could be the victim of a sugar coma after you’ve made a few. Don’t ask how I know. Just trust me 🙂
