Back in early February, Connecting Threads announced a Mystery Quilt on their Quilt With Us Community Forum.
I took a peek and thought it looked doable, so I signed up. I was right! It was very easy and very manageable … three parts, three weeks.
The most difficult part, as is usually the case, was picking the fabric. Only four were needed … two medium/dark, one light tone-on-tone, and one light or dark were the recommendations.
I chose fabrics from the California Girl collection by Fig Tree Quilts.
The first part had us cutting a few strips and squares. The strips were for making 4-patches, and the squares were for making a 3-patch strip. A few pieces were to be “saved for the future.” They do this on purpose, you know, just so we can take what we’ve done and play with the pieces to try and see if we can figure out how it all goes together. I’ve never figured them out ahead of time.
Week One’s instructions produced this …
4-patches
3-patch strips
a few extra blocks for the next round.
Week Two was easy peasy … make 32 flying geese, then assemble with Week One’s leftovers to produce eight beautiful Sawtooth Stars …
The final week had has cutting a few more rectangular pieces to attach to the 4-patches …
and then adding those strips to the 3-patch strips from Week one to create these Built-in Border blocks.
We also cut out some really big triangles …
Put it all together and voila!
The top finished at 51-1/2″ x 68-1/2″. There is a bit of leftover fabric, so I’m contemplating adding a couple of smaller borders to make it a wee bit bigger. Hmmm … wonder how long it will take for me to get that done?
Stay tuned!
