Welcome to Sunnyside Manor …
Well, it’s not really a “manor,” at least not by definition, but it is definitely a bright sunny yellow .. and “Sunnyside Manor” just plain ole sounds kinda cool. And since this house is way bigger than anything we’ve ever lived in, “Manor” it is!
Since much of this blog is going to be about fixing up said Manor and making it our home, I thought it fitting to have a series of posts introducing the home and property. Today we’ll focus on the exterior and the area that we fondly call “The Dungeon.”
For starters, though, here are the details that drew us to this house last year … (I was drooling after the first 7 words.)
Custom built home with three covered porches.
Chef’s dream kitchen with Kenmore Elite fridge/freezer, granite covered 9 foot island and 6-burner gas stove with griddle and double ovens.
Main level bedroom, bath and office.
Private staircase leads to Master bedroom suite which includes a 14 x 12 walk-in closet, adjoining office and sitting room.
Master shower with three shower heads.
Large mud room with 1/2 bath between kitchen and 3-car garage.
Hardwood floors on both levels.
Spacious 2nd floor laundry with closet and sink. Newer washer and dryer convey.
Each bedroom on the 2nd floor has it’s own walk-in closet for an abundance of storage space.
Unfinished basement.Numbers:
Finished Square Feet: 3527 Unfinished Square Feet: 1562
Bedrooms: 4 Bathrooms: 3.5
Acreage: 1.1 acres
Ahhh … doesn’t it sound marvelous? I remind myself of that every time I pull out the broom and mop to do the floors.
Let’s take a trip through the photo album and take a peek at those magnificent porches.

Front Porch
The front porch is just screaming for a couple of rockers and maybe even a glider. And wouldn’t it just look lovely with some planters hanging on the rails with colorful spring annuals?

Side Porch
The side porch is huge … 12 x 20 huge! We’ve tossed around a couple of ideas for this space … leave it as a porch, enclose it into more of a four-season room, or fully enclose it into a sun room. I think we’ll start simple and work with it as a porch for awhile. It’s definitely missing something … a little paint and maybe some screen … and definitely some furniture. We’ve already got some of that covered and we’ll be featuring it in a future post. There’s another surprise that happened with this porch too. Stay tuned!
One of the interesting details in the real estate report was that there was a 3-car garage. Well … not quite. The total square footage that the garage takes up is equal to a 3-car garage, but there are only two garage doors and only two cars will fit. A future post will explain it all in more detail. Let me tell you though … we are super thankful that this house had an attached garage because 9 out of the 10 homes that we looked at when house hunting had NO garage. When the hubby is an automotive mechanic by trade, not having a garage is not an option.

Back Porch
This is the view from the garden to the back porch. As you can see, it’s a bi-level porch with the upper level being covered. The french doors on the right go into the garage.
Yes, the back porch needs some paint. We’d also like to screen the upper porch, but are still trying to figure out what kind of “door” to install in such a wide opening.

Right Side
This is the right side of the house where the exterior entrance to the basement is. Guess every house has a not-so-glamorous side.
At some point we’ll make this area a little prettier. I’d like to see a nice covering around the HVAC units, and maybe some kind of a brick / cobblestone patio with a pergola covering.

The Dungeon
Definitely NOT the pretty part of the house at the moment, hence the endearing reference to “The Dungeon,” but oh, the potential! This is a little over 1500 square feet of Pinterest heaven! We’ve tossed around no less than 100 different ideas for this space. We could literally put a whole other house down here. The possibilities are almost endless!
I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know our outside corner of the world.
Stay tuned! There’s more to come!

You dont get that kind of real estate in California! How about installing Phantom Screens on that porch opening to enclose it? You know, the screens that roll back into their frame…they can be sized to fit any opening and all they require is two side holders for the screens to roll into and a floor track. Just a suggestion. have fun with all your ideas.

Hi. I’m new to your blog from Cedar Hill Ranch. I have a question about the “not-so-glamourous” side of your house. It looks like the surface of the siding to the right of the upper window has some shadowing outlining what I would guess is the framework for a possible window. Am I correct or is it just these middle aged eyes? I’m wondering if that is what builders do so it would be possible to easily add a window later if you choose. Love your house – the color, the porches, the style…!
Beautiful home!!! How excited you must be. Can’t wait to see the rest! I’m a new follower, following via G+, twitter, and Pinterest. Have a great day!

What a lovely home! I just made a trip to VA to house hunt and am happy to say that after a week I boarded my plane with a ratified contract. It was a crazy busy week. We currently live overseas, but in 5 short months we will be heading home to the good ole’ USA and a new home in VA.
Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a lovely house. I’m sure you’ll have fun making into a beautiful home for you and your family.

I love it, indeed. The only thing I would have to change, were it mine, are the number of steps involved.
Oh, my aching back and bad knees. It’s quite annoying to have issues with such things, as I do love the look of a stairway.
The color is perfect. I always wanted a yellow house.

What a beautiful home! Our first house was yellow with black shutters. We loved that house! Can’t wait to see the process! Life to the full, Melissa

Thank you so much Melissa! I’ve never been much of a “yellow” person, especially on houses, but I’ve come to love it

Oh man…Your home is so stinkin’ adorable! Love, love all the porches! Even though it is so big, it still has a “cottagy” feel too it. Just wanted to thank you for stopping by by lil’ blog!

Oh My, My hubby does construction and it would have been a dream to have a space to make into exactly what
we dreamed of…and so large. It makes my creative juices flow. LOL Love your home so far! Dianntha
Thank you so much Dianntha! My hubby could definitely learn a thing or ten from your hubby. We’ve often said “wood” is NOT his thing. But he’s learning … slowly but surely
Have a blessed day!
